About Religious Medals

What size sterling religious medal to chose.
Broderick has found men prefer round medals one inch in diameter or 25mm no larger no smaller.
Ladies prefer oval medals 3/4 inch or 18mm.

St. Christopher is the patron saint for travel and sports.

St. Michael is the medal preferred by police officers and the military.

What finish to chose
All our religious medals are made by US manufacturers. Most finish their medals by silver or gold plating or by spraying lacquer over the sterling to prevent tarnishing which gives that grey look. To offset the grey look some manufacturers grind off details to make parts shine; however, most of our customers think the medal is flawed.

Silver and Gold Plating. keeps the item from tarnishing but then it shows scratches and could overshadow engraving. Unplated item still scratch but the scratches do not stand out.

That dark look in center of a medal provides detail and definition by the manufacture adding varnish and such.

The problem with lacquer and varnish is that over the years the lacquer and sweat can make a medal to turn green. In addition, if silver polish is added it bonds with the laquer and can cause terrible looking results. This does not happen with all the medals. Some manufacturers use very little lacquer and others use a lot.

Sterling medals beginning with PASS in the item number have absolutely gorgeous quality sterling underneath the finishing. To show this sterling we ask the manufacturer to cast but not finish. Broderick then buffs the medals until they are gorgeous. In doing so the medals get hot, over 300 degrees. For these medals we put RWMG at the end of the item number. RW stands for raw and MG for make gorgeous. Beauty vs. function. Yes they are gorgeous and the sterling feels alive, however they will tarnish and should be worn and rubbed. Every year of so put a few drops of silver polish on your fingers. Continue rubbing the medal with paper towel and you should notice as you do the beauty come back. Below is a link to such medals.
